FAQs
What makes a good SEO slug?
Keep it short (3-5 words), use your primary keyword, separate words with hyphens, and avoid stop words like 'the', 'and', 'in'. Shorter slugs are easier to share and read in SERPs.
Should I remove stop words from URLs?
Usually yes. Google ignores most stop words in URLs and shorter slugs are cleaner. However, if a stop word is part of your brand name or keyword phrase, keep it.
Can I change a slug after publishing?
Yes, but set up a 301 redirect from the old URL to the new one. Changing slugs without redirects breaks existing backlinks and can temporarily hurt rankings.
Hyphens or underscores in URLs?
Always use hyphens. Google treats hyphens as word separators but underscores as joining characters — 'seo_tips' is read as one word, 'seo-tips' as two.
