The complete SEO checklist

A complete SEO checklist covers seven areas: setup basics, technical SEO, keyword research, on-page optimization, content strategy, off-page authority, and local SEO. This one is 60 steps, updated for AI search - because ranking in Google and being cited by ChatGPT, Perplexity, and AI Overviews now depend on the same foundations.

SEO basics

The account and infrastructure setup everything else depends on. Do these once per site.

Set up Google Search Console & Bing Webmaster Tools

Both are free and show you exactly which queries you rank for, indexing problems, and manual penalties. Bing Webmaster Tools also feeds Bing Copilot and ChatGPT search.

Set up Google Analytics (GA4)

You can't improve what you don't measure. GA4 shows which pages earn organic traffic and what visitors do next.

Create & submit an XML sitemap

List every indexable page and submit the sitemap in Search Console so crawlers discover new content fast.

Create a robots.txt file

Control what crawlers can access - and don't accidentally block pages that should rank. Validate yours with the robots.txt tester.

Enable HTTPS for security

HTTPS is a confirmed ranking signal, and browsers flag plain HTTP as not secure. Redirect all HTTP traffic to HTTPS.

Set up Ahrefs or Semrush webmaster tools

Their free webmaster tiers add backlink and site-health data that Search Console doesn't show.

Check manual actions in Search Console

A manual action can wipe out rankings site-wide. Check Security & Manual Actions once - and after any traffic collapse.

Technical SEO

If crawlers can't reach, render, and index your pages, nothing else on this checklist matters.

Ensure pages are crawlable & indexable

No accidental noindex tags, no important pages blocked in robots.txt, no login walls in front of content that should rank.

Identify & fix broken links and orphan pages

Broken links waste crawl budget and trust; orphan pages (no internal links pointing to them) are nearly invisible to crawlers and users alike.

Remove redirect chains

Each extra hop leaks link equity and slows crawlers. Update internal links to point directly at the final URL.

Optimize Core Web Vitals

LCP, INP, and CLS measure real user experience and feed into rankings. Test any URL with the Core Web Vitals checker.

Ensure the site is mobile friendly

Google indexes the mobile version of your site first. Responsive layout, readable text, and tap-friendly targets are the baseline.

Implement canonical tags correctly

Every page should declare its canonical URL so duplicate and parameterized versions consolidate into one authoritative page.

Implement FAQ, HowTo & Article schema

Structured data helps search engines and AI systems understand your content and can earn rich results. Validate with the schema checker.

Keyword research

Pick battles you can win. Every page should exist because a real query with real intent demands it.

Find primary & supporting keywords

One primary keyword per page, plus the secondary terms that naturally belong in the same piece of content.

Include long-tail & conversational keywords

Longer, specific queries convert better and match how people phrase questions to AI assistants and voice search.

Analyze competitor keywords to identify gaps

The fastest keyword list is the one your competitor already ranks for and you don't. See how DidYouSEO's keyword gap analysis filters those gaps by relevance and winnability.

Map search intent to keywords

Informational, commercial, transactional, navigational - the page format must match the intent or it won't rank regardless of quality.

Group keywords into topics/clusters

One strong page per topic cluster beats ten thin pages competing with each other for the same query.

Map keywords to pages

Maintain an explicit keyword-to-URL map so two pages never target the same query (cannibalization splits your authority).

Assess & prioritize keywords by ranking potential

Weigh difficulty against your site's authority. A 500/mo keyword you can win this quarter beats a 50,000/mo keyword you can't.

On-page SEO

How each individual page tells search engines - and AI systems - exactly what it's about.

Make URLs short, clean, descriptive, and keyword-inclusive

/seo-checklist beats /page?id=4823. Slugs are read by crawlers, users, and AI systems alike.

Ensure one primary keyword per page

Each page should have a single clear answer to "what query is this for?" - if you can't answer it, neither can Google.

Optimize title tags & meta descriptions

Front-load the keyword, stay inside Google's display limits, and write descriptions that earn the click. Preview yours with the SERP preview tool and validate tags with the meta tags checker.

Use H1 once, clearly

One H1 per page stating the main topic. Structure the rest with H2/H3 so both readers and machines can follow the outline.

Ensure keywords appear naturally

Mention the primary keyword early, then write for humans. Keyword stuffing reads badly and ranks worse.

Optimize images & media for speed

Compress images, use modern formats (WebP/AVIF), lazy-load below the fold, and always set descriptive alt text.

Add internal links contextually

Link related pages from within the content using descriptive anchors - internal links are how authority flows around your site.

Include external links to trusted sources

Citing authoritative sources builds trust with readers and signals well-researched content to search engines and AI systems.

Content strategy (AI-ready)

This is where AI search changes the game: content that can be extracted, quoted, and cited wins visibility in AI answers - not just blue links.

Ensure content solves real user problems

Content that exists to rank, rather than to help, gets filtered out by both algorithms and readers.

Start with a strong introduction

Answer the query directly in the first two sentences. AI Overviews and featured snippets extract openings, not conclusions.

Include original insights

Data, experiments, and first-hand experience are what make your page worth citing over the hundred others saying the same thing.

Cover the topic in depth

Answer the follow-up questions, not just the headline query. Depth is what separates a citation-worthy source from a summary.

Use structured headings for AI extraction

Clear H2/H3 hierarchy lets AI systems lift the exact section that answers a question - unstructured walls of text get skipped.

Use question-style headings

Headings phrased the way people actually ask ("How often should I update content?") map directly onto AI and voice queries.

Write sections that stand alone if quoted

Each section should make sense when extracted without the surrounding page - that's how AI engines quote sources.

Ensure E-E-A-T signals are present

Named authors, real bios, and cited sources. Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness decide who gets ranked - and cited.

Include helpful images, infographics & videos

Visuals improve engagement and earn image-search and video-carousel visibility that text alone can't.

Include clear CTAs

Every page should have an obvious next step - traffic without direction is a bounce statistic.

Include FAQs where relevant

FAQ sections with FAQPage schema answer long-tail questions on the page and are prime extraction targets for AI answers.

Match schema & format to search intent

An answer gets Q&A formatting, a guide gets HowTo, a comparison gets a table. Format mismatch loses to worse content in the right shape.

Encourage user-generated content

Reviews, comments, and community answers add fresh, unique text and authentic experience signals you can't write yourself.

Update content regularly

Rankings decay quietly as content ages. Refresh key pages on a schedule, not just when traffic has already dropped.

Improve or remove thin pages

Pages with nothing to offer drag down the site's overall quality assessment. Expand them, merge them, or delete and redirect.

Optimize content for voice search

Conversational phrasing and direct, concise answers serve voice assistants - and the same properties feed AI chat answers.

Off-page SEO

Authority is earned off your site. Backlinks remain the strongest proxy search engines and AI systems have for trust.

Build high-quality backlinks

A few links from relevant, authoritative sites beat hundreds of directory spam links. Track your progress with the domain rating checker.

Reclaim lost & broken links

Links you already earned that now 404 are the cheapest wins in link building - redirect the dead URL or ask the linker to update it.

Replicate competitors' links

If a site links to your competitor's guide, it has already shown willingness to link to content like yours. Make yours better and pitch it.

Replace competitors' broken links

Broken link building: find dead pages competitors are cited for, build the replacement, and offer it to everyone still linking to the 404.

Leverage guest posting, HARO & digital PR

Expert commentary and original stories earn editorial links - the kind that can't be bought and count the most.

Ensure anchor texts look natural

A backlink profile where every anchor is your exact money keyword looks manufactured. Branded and natural-phrase anchors should dominate.

Monitor backlink quality (disavow only when required)

Google ignores most spam links on its own - disavow is a last resort for clear attacks or a manual action. If you need one, use the disavow file generator.

Promote content through social media

Social shares don't rank pages directly, but they put content in front of the people who do link - and AI engines read social discussion too.

Local SEO

For businesses serving a physical area, local signals decide whether you appear in the map pack and "near me" searches.

Set up & optimize your Google Business Profile

The single highest-impact local ranking factor. Complete every field, add photos, and keep hours accurate.

Ensure consistent NAP across listings, site & platforms

Name, Address, Phone must match everywhere - inconsistencies erode the trust signals local rankings are built on.

Add location + service schema

LocalBusiness structured data tells search engines exactly where you are and what you offer.

Collect & respond to reviews

Review volume, rating, and your responses all feed local rankings - and AI assistants summarize reviews when recommending businesses.

Create local landing pages

One genuinely useful page per location or service area - not doorway pages with the city name swapped out.

Build local citations

Listings in relevant local and industry directories corroborate your business details.

Embed a Google Map on your site

A map embed on your contact page reinforces the connection between your website and your physical location.

Frequently asked questions

What should a complete SEO checklist include?+

Seven areas: basic setup (Search Console, analytics, sitemap, robots.txt, HTTPS), technical SEO (crawlability, Core Web Vitals, canonicals, schema), keyword research, on-page optimization (titles, headings, internal links), content strategy, off-page SEO (backlinks and digital PR), and - for businesses with a physical presence - local SEO.

What makes an SEO checklist "AI-ready"?+

AI-ready SEO adds extraction-focused habits on top of classic optimization: direct answers in the first sentences, question-style headings, sections that stand alone when quoted, FAQ blocks with schema, visible E-E-A-T signals, and structured data - the properties AI Overviews, ChatGPT, and Perplexity look for when choosing what to cite.

In what order should I work through this checklist?+

Top to bottom. Basics and technical SEO are prerequisites - if pages can't be crawled and indexed, nothing else pays off. Then keyword research decides what pages to build, on-page and content make them rank-worthy, and off-page authority compounds everything over time.

How often should I re-run an SEO checklist?+

Setup items are one-time, but technical health, content freshness, and backlink quality drift constantly. Re-check technical items monthly, refresh key content quarterly, and monitor rankings and backlinks continuously - decay is gradual until it isn't.

Check your site against this list automatically

DidYouSEO audits your site against 30+ of these checks in one scan - technical, on-page, and AI-readiness included.
