FAQs
What is a disavow file?
A disavow file tells Google to ignore specific backlinks when assessing your site. It's used to deal with toxic or spammy links that could trigger a manual penalty.
When should I use the disavow tool?
Only when you have clear evidence of harmful backlinks AND you've already tried to have them removed manually. Google says most sites never need to use it.
Should I disavow domains or individual URLs?
Disavowing at the domain level (domain:example.com) is safer - it covers all current and future links from that domain. Only disavow individual URLs if the domain also has good links.
How do I submit the disavow file?
Go to Google's Disavow Tool in Search Console, select your property, and upload the .txt file. It may take weeks for Google to process it.
