FAQs

What is a UTM parameter?

UTM parameters are tags added to your URL that tell Google Analytics where your traffic came from - the source (e.g., google), medium (e.g., cpc), and campaign name.

Are UTM parameters case-sensitive?

Yes - Google Analytics treats utm_source=Google and utm_source=google as different sources. Use lowercase and be consistent across your campaigns.

Should I use UTM parameters on internal links?

No - adding UTM tags to internal links overrides the original source, making it look like all sessions start from the middle of your site. Only use them on external links.

What are utm_term and utm_content for?

utm_term tracks paid search keywords. utm_content differentiates between multiple links in the same email or ad - useful for A/B testing different CTAs.
