A page can sit on page one of Google and still be missing from the answer a person actually reads. Between 22 September and 19 October 2026, Bing Webmaster Tools credited this site with about 2,100 citations inside Copilot. About 91% of them came from one post, how to search a web page for a keyword. The rest of the site barely showed up.
That gap is what answer engine optimization is for. By the end of this guide you'll know how ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and Google's AI answers choose a source, the order of work that gets a page into those answers, and how to check the result from Claude or ChatGPT through the DidYouSEO MCP server.
What answer engine optimization means
Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the work of getting an AI answer to read your page, trust it, and name it. Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the same job. The name GEO comes from a 2023 research paper on optimizing pages for generative engines. AEO is the name most marketers use. The steps don't change with the label.
An answer engine takes a question, fetches a handful of pages, writes one reply, and cites two or three sources. Google's guide to its AI search features says those answers still depend on the same crawling and ranking systems as ordinary Search. A page that isn't indexed has nothing to be quoted.
Tracking whether you were mentioned is a different job. That's AI search visibility: measuring the citation. This guide is the work that changes the citation.
How an answer engine picks a page
One question rarely stays one question. The assistant splits it into smaller lookups, fetches pages for each, and writes from those. That split is query fan-out. A single "best invoicing tool for freelancers" search can pull a comparison, a pricing page, a how-to, and a review.
The page that gets cited usually does four things at once:
- A crawler that feeds that assistant was allowed to fetch it.
- The page answers the question in the first few sentences, in words a person would quote.
- Other sites already mention the brand for that topic, so the assistant has a second source.
- The page is in an index the assistant actually searches.
Each product searches a different index. ChatGPT search fetches pages with OpenAI's search crawler, OAI-SearchBot, and a page that ranks on Bing tends to show up there too. Perplexity crawls with PerplexityBot and keeps its own index. Google AI Overviews and AI Mode use Google's index. Claude is a third path again: Anthropic's crawler page lists Claude-SearchBot for search and Claude-User for pages fetched while answering a question. Optimizing one assistant and ignoring the crawler that feeds it leaves that assistant out.
| Assistant | What it reads | What to check first |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT search | OAI-SearchBot, and pages that rank on Bing | robots.txt allows OAI-SearchBot; the page ranks on Bing |
| Perplexity | PerplexityBot and its own index | PerplexityBot is allowed; the page answers in a quotable block |
| Google AI Overviews | Google's index | The page is indexed and already answers the query |
| Claude | Claude-SearchBot, plus Claude-User fetches | Claude-SearchBot and Claude-User aren't blocked |
AEO, SEO, and tracking, side by side
| Job | What you change | Where it shows up |
|---|---|---|
| SEO | Crawl, index, titles, links, page speed | A blue link on Google or Bing |
| Answer engine optimization | Crawler access, a direct answer, mentions on other sites | A citation inside an AI answer |
| AI search visibility | The questions you track and who gets named | A report of mentions, not a fix |
SEO still comes first. If Google or Bing hasn't indexed the page, the assistant has no copy to quote. AEO is the extra pass: the passage someone could paste into an answer, and proof the brand exists outside your own site. Citations and mentions are different signals. A mention with no link still teaches the model your name. A citation sends the visit.
AI Overviews and featured snippets look similar and behave differently. A snippet is a quote from the page that already ranks. An Overview is a written answer that can cite a page that isn't the top result. Winning the snippet doesn't hand you the Overview.
The answer engine optimization checklist
Do these in order. Later steps don't help if an earlier one is broken.
1. Let the right crawlers in
Open robots.txt and read the rules for GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ClaudeBot, Claude-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and Google-Extended. Blocking a training crawler and blocking a search crawler are different decisions. OAI-SearchBot fetches pages for ChatGPT search. GPTBot collects pages for training. Blocking both because they share a company name removes you from ChatGPT's answers. Anthropic splits its bots the same way: ClaudeBot for training, Claude-SearchBot for search. The breakdown of OpenAI's three crawlers spells out which one does which job.
Google-Extended is the odd one out. It isn't a crawler, just a robots.txt token for Gemini training and grounding. Blocking it doesn't remove you from AI Overviews, which are built from the normal Search index.
Check the file with the free robots.txt tester, then read how to see if a crawler is blocked. A firewall or a CDN rule can block a bot that robots.txt allows.
2. Confirm the crawlers actually visit
A rule that says "allow" means nothing if the bot never comes. Bot traffic shows GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot and the rest hitting your logs, separate from human visits. No visits from a search crawler, after weeks of allowing it, usually means the site is new to that index or something else is rejecting the request.
3. Answer the question in a block someone can quote
Put the definition or the steps in the first screen, in plain sentences. One idea per sentence. A table the assistant can lift. A heading that matches the question people type.
Experience and authorship still matter when the page is about something you did. Our Copilot citations clustered on a post that answered one specific question with steps, not on a page that talked around the topic.
4. Get mentioned somewhere that isn't your site
Assistants prefer a claim they can see twice. A docs page plus a third-party write-up beats a docs page alone. Directories, a guest answer, a comparison someone else wrote: each one is a second source. You can't manufacture that in a weekend. You can stop being the only site that says your name.
5. Measure, then fix the page that lost
Ask the question your buyer asks and see who is named. How to find the questions that already cite you and how to check whether ChatGPT knows the brand cover the measurement. This guide doesn't repeat those methods.
Schema markup helps Google and some assistants read what a page is. It doesn't make a vague page quotable. Add it after the answer is clear, and check it with the schema validator.
What to skip
Starting with llms.txt. The file is cheap to add and, so far, weakly used by the assistants that answer questions. What llms.txt actually does is the longer version. Write the quotable answer first.
Blocking every AI crawler. That keeps training bots out and also keeps you out of the answers. Allow the search crawlers. Decide on the training crawlers separately.
Chasing a keyword density number. Repeating "answer engine optimization" in every sentence doesn't make a passage more quotable. Density targets are an old ranking idea. A clear answer is the thing that gets copied.
Run the checks from Claude or ChatGPT
The same checks are available over MCP, so you can ask in plain language instead of clicking through a dashboard. Connect DidYouSEO's MCP server to Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor, then ask things like:
- Which AI crawlers does this robots.txt block?
- Validate the schema on this URL and say what's missing.
- Audit this page for anything that would stop an answer from quoting it.
- What Search Console queries does this site already get impressions for?
- Once Google Analytics is connected, which landing pages get organic sessions, and which visits came from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude or Copilot?
The connector reads your Search Console property and, when Analytics is connected, GA4. It doesn't change the site. Before writing this guide we ran the cannibalization check on didyouseo.com over 90 days. Nothing competed for "answer engine optimization", so a new page was safe. It did find one split elsewhere: two of our pages share impressions for a "client SEO report" search, and neither ranks well. That's the kind of thing to fix before writing more.
The answer engine optimization tool page lists the same checks in product form, with the free tools that don't need an account.
Mistakes that waste the first month
Writing a second page for a query you already rank for. Two URLs on the same question split the impressions. Search Console's query report shows the URL Google chose. Improve that URL. A new post is for a question no page of yours answers yet.
Treating every assistant as Google. A page that ranks on Google and is blocked from OAI-SearchBot can be absent from ChatGPT search. Check each crawler.
Measuring once. Citations move when other sites publish and when you change the passage. Check the same questions monthly, and keep the wording stable so the comparison means something.
Reporting rankings and calling it AEO. A position in Google is the SEO result. The AEO result is whether the answer named you. Track both, and label them.
FAQ
What is answer engine optimization?
Answer engine optimization is the work of getting ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and Google's AI answers to fetch your page and cite it. It covers crawler access, a passage that answers the question directly, and mentions of your brand on other sites.
Does answer engine optimization still need ordinary SEO?
Yes. Those assistants fetch pages from a web index. A page that isn't crawled and indexed isn't available to quote. Fix crawling and indexing first, then the answer itself.
How long does answer engine optimization take to show up?
Crawler access can change within days of a robots.txt edit. Citations take longer, because the assistant has to recrawl, and mentions on other sites take as long as those sites take to publish. Check the same questions each month rather than looking for a change overnight.
How do I check answer engine optimization without a new tool login?
Connect the DidYouSEO MCP server to the assistant you already use. Ask it to read robots.txt, validate schema, audit the page, and pull Search Console queries. Add Google Analytics in the dashboard if you also want organic landing pages and visits referred by AI assistants.
Rank on Google. Show up in AI search.
Audit your site, track Search Console data and see if AI assistants mention you, in one dashboard.
